Running Eclipse on Windows Vista

Eclipse Service Management software, from version 4.8 onwards, will run on Windows Vista based computers assuming that Vista is correctly configured for Eclipse and that adequate system RAM has been installed. Note that Eclipse has only been tested on Windows Vista 32bit edition, and has not been tested on 64 bit editions.

Firstly make sure your computer conforms to at these these system requirements:

  • At least a P4 level processor or better.
  • At least 2GB of RAM installed (more if you have a lot of other applications grabbing memory - Eclipse needs at least 512mb of available RAM to function correctly)
  • Network access via TCP/IP installed
  • Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Editions (we've been told that it should work ok with Home Edition, however this should be something you test with the downloadable demo of Eclipse for your computer)

Once you have ensured that your computer meets these minimum requirements, then there are a few system settings that need to be done with Vista to ensure that it will work ok for Eclipse:

Turn off User Account Control (UAC) By default, Vista turns this ON with all new installations. Eclipse will not work correctly with it turned ON, so you will need to disable it. Click this link for instructions on how to do this.
Disable Data Execution Protection (DEP) This is a major issue for Eclipse on certain hardware (not all). We have a full article on this online. Click this link for full instructions on what to do.

With these changes done, make sure you reboot your computer so that Vista allows the changes to go into affect.

If these changes are not done, Eclipse will likely crash on startup. You may get the setup wizard to work, but it will crash shortly after that if UAC is not disabled. If DEP is on, and your hardware supports DEP, there is a high likelihood that Eclipse will simply shut down to the desktop when you attempt to start it.

Finally if you have a restrictive security policy in place on your network, you may wish to set Eclipse to 'Run As Administrator'. This will ensure that the Eclipse application has all the security rights needed to do its job.

To 'Run As Administrator' you will need to do the following:

  1. On your Desktop, find the shortcut to Eclipse Service.
  2. Right click on the shortcut, and choose 'Properties'
  3. When the properties window appears, click on 'Compatibility' and you will see the following:

    Vista Run As

  4. Check the Privilege Level option 'Run this program as an administrator' and then click Apply.

That should be enough to get it to run on Vista. If you are having any further issues, please CONTACT US so that we can attempt to assist.
