Upgrading
your Eclipse Multi-User System
The
following instructions are applicable to any existing
Eclipse user who is looking to upgrade any existing Eclipse
multi-user installation.
System Requirements
With
all Eclipse updates, there are often changes to the system
requirements for the new software. Your server should
be configured as follows:
-
At least 1GB of RAM available
to Eclipse
- 1GB of free hard disk space on the installation drive
where Eclipse will be installed
- At
least a P4 or similar processor in the server (the faster,
the better)
- Windows 2000, 2003 or 2008 Server - Multi-user server installs will NOT work on Desktop OS
- 32 or 64 Bit operating systems are fine
- Firewall on the server must allow port 19813 to be open to local clients
- Remove IIS from the server if running Eclipse NET - IMPORTANT
Before
you install this update IT IS IMPORTANT that you backup
your current Eclipse installation.
BACKUP!!!!!!!
Remember... If something goes wrong, and you didn't backup, you are on your own. There is nothing anyone can do to help you if you don't have a backup.
To backup your existing Eclipse
installation, follow these steps below:
-
Find the directory on your
server where Eclipse was installed
- Shut down 4D Server/Eclipse on the server
so that it is not running
- Copy the ENTIRE contents of that directory
and any subfolders in it, to another location on your computer,
ideally on a differnet hard disk drive
You
should now be ready to do your upgrade. Although you can use
the built in 4D Backup system that comes with Eclipse &
4D Server, it is easier to do a manual backup as described
above for any installation of any Eclipse update.
Upgrading from v4 to later version
If you have previously had Eclipse installed on your server, and your original version was earlier than version 5.0, then you will find the licensing & registration process has changed. Version 5 licensing requires that your server be connected to the Internet and validates its license against our servers. When you first install a version 5 system (either fresh install or upgrade) it will register your system for a 15 day trial. This can be easily converted to a registered system by ensuring that you enter your customer details and that they match to the records we have for the purchase. This is particularly true of the email address. If you enter details that are different to the details that we have on file for the purchase, it won't register. Contact us to get your registration details if you are unsure of them.
Also Eclipse version 5 requires updated Eclipse Client installations. This only needs to be done once and only if you are upgrading from version 4 to version 5 or later of Eclipse. This is to keep compatibility with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 operating systems. Your installation system includes the latest Eclipse Network Client installer that is installed on the server after you run the installer. It is in a folder entitled 'Eclipse Network Client Installer'. Copy the file in that folder to each workstation and run it there to upgrade the client installation. New client installations will work fine with Eclipse version 5 and later versions, and are also backwards compatible with earlier versions of Eclipse as well. However versions of the Eclipse Client software prior to v5, will NOT work on version 5 Eclipse systems.
Performing
a brand new Installation
The
installer link provided to you is both an updater and a
full install of Eclipse Multi-User. If you are looking
to install this system on a new computer, you should review
and follow the complete installation instructions for this
which can be downloaded HERE.
NOTE: Eclipse is designed to be installed WITH the installation
manual as a step by step guide. Ignoring the installation
manual is NOT a good idea!
You
will need your serial numbers and custom code to do this.
Previous serial numbers and custom codes for Eclipse are
compatible with Eclipse. If you cannot find these numbers, contact
TECH SOLUTIONS or your local reseller for assistance.
If
you are performing a brand new installation of Eclipse, and
have followed the instructions in the installation manual,
that's it. You are all set, and can ignore the rest of these
instructions.
Updating
your Eclipse system
The following
instructions are specific to any customer who is UPGRADING
their existing Eclipse system that is running on the SAME
server box as the previous version.
You
should have been sent a link to download the appropriate version
of Eclipse for your site. This will give you a complete installer
for a FULL new Eclipse system. It includes new software, a
blank database and new web pages. If you have edited any web
pages for your site from the wwwroot folder in Eclipse, you
will need to re-apply any changes you have made to the new
pages that are supplied with the new version of Eclipse. Simply
copying your pages back into the directory after the installation
has been done will not work, and will cause errors if the
wrong versions of the pages are on the system for the release
version of the software.
The
installer provided is an Installshield installer, and will
take care of everything for your installation. However it
will reset your system to a new system with a blank data file.
There is one additional step required, unless you are running
Eclipse 4.5 MC30 or later revision, for you to copy your datafiles
back to your Eclipse installation directory after doing the
update in order to return your system to normal operation.
To
install the update do the following:
to your server as Administrator to perform the installation
- Download
the installer program from the link provided to you by Tech
Solutions to your server
- Shut
down 4D Server/Eclipse and perform the backup as stated
above
- Run
the installer program on your server
- Note
any changes to License Agreement, or any release notes displayed
during the installer's operation
- Choose
the installation directory as prompted to be the same as
your previous installation
- Then
complete the installer, letting it run normally
- At
the end of the installer's execution, it will prompt you
to reboot your server. Finish the installer and then reboot
the server
- When
the server restarts, follow these instructions
- Locate
the file ECLIPSEPRO.4DD and ECLIPSEPRO.4DR from your backup
of your previous Eclipse installation
- Copy
these files to the new Eclipse installation directory, overwriting
the files with the same name in that directory
- This
will restore your datafiles to the new software
- NOTE:
You will not need to do this if you are upgrading from Eclipse
4.5 MC30 version or later
If you had any shortcuts on the Desktop
for starting Eclipse in the past, you will probably notice
that they have either changed, or new Shortcuts for starting
Eclipse through a Drag & Drop mechanism on the desktop
have been supplied. Remove the old shortcuts if this is
the case.
Start Eclipse. With Eclipse, the easiest
way to start it is to drag the Eclipse icon on the
desktop onto the 4D Server icon and let go. This will
start 4D Server, but force it to run with Eclipse as
its application.
If you are prompted for serial numbers,
then you are installing the update onto a new server that
hasn't had Eclipse/4D Server installed onto it before.
You will need to locate your original serial numbers to
do this, or contact TECH
SOLUTIONS for assistance.
If you receive the message 'The system
hasn't been correctly setup' when you start your software,
you have not correctly copied over your data files from
your backup and Eclipse is trying to startup with blank
data files. You need to Quit 4D Server at this time, and
copy the files ECLIPSEPRO.4DD and ECLIPSEPRO.4DR over
from your backup first, before starting Eclipse/4D Server.
Special considerations for Eclipse NET users
All installers of Eclipse, whether you are running them
for the first time or as an update, include the 'generic'
set of HTML pages, Javascript files, CSS, and images that
comes with a standard Eclipse system. If you have customized
any of these pages, or have systems that connect to Eclipse
NET and expect the Eclipse NET system to be static, there
is a very high chance that installing an update to Eclipse
will revert all web pages back to their generic format. Therefore
it is important that you backup your existing WWWROOT folder
in your Eclipse installation directory with any changes you
have made, or these will be overwritten by the installer.
You will have to re-apply any changes you have done to the
new Eclipse WWWROOT folder content, so it pays to have a
copy of the old one so you can check the difference between
files and identify what has changed to accomodate with your
own pages.
4D
Server Database Properties
Each update of Eclipse will reset all 4D Server Database
Properties back to their original settings when Eclipse was
originally installed. You can reset these back to any custom
settings you may have elected to change after the installation
has been run.
Updating
your 4D Clients
If you
are upgrading a system running Eclipse 4.5 to a later version,
you will NOT need to update your 4D Clients on the workstations
that connect to the server. However, if you are upgrading
an Eclipse system that is earlier than the 4.5 version, you
will need to update all 4D Client software on the workstations
on your network.
For
Eclipse 4.5, all 4D Clients installed on workstations on your
network will need to be updated to the 4D Client 6.8.5 version.
Old versions of 4D Client will not be able to login to the
new 4D Server 6.8.5 software, and any attempt to do so will
give an error stating that the version of 4D Client and 4D
Server are incompatible.
Make
sure you are logged in with Administrator level privellages
on any workstation that you install 4D Client on. You will
need certain write privellages to do this, and should be logged
on with high level, Administrator rights to do the installation.
To
install the correct 4D Client software on the workstations,
you will find a new 4D Client installer in the Eclipse installation
directory that is created in the location where you installed
Eclipse on your server. Copy the 4D Client installer files
to a shared volume on your network, or burn to a CD so that
you can take this to all workstations and update them.
To
update a workstation 4D Client software, first uninstall the
previous 4D Client software on the workstation. You will find
this in the Start -> Settings -> Control Panels ->
Add/Remove Software option in Windows. Locate the Eclipse
4D Client entry and remove it.
Once
this is done, then run the new 4D Client installer on each
workstation. This will update the workstation to the 6.8.5
4D Client version.
4D
Client/Eclipse can now be started normally on any workstation.
