Running
Remote Access on your Eclipse Server
Eclipse
is a true client/server application, and (for multiple user
operation) has a server software component and a workstation
software component. The server software runs on top of 4D
Server, a server application, database and web platform that
works with Windows 2000 or 2003 Servers. The workstations
run 4D Client, a client application that connects to the server,
and runs on Windows 2000 or XP systems.
Each
component in the solution must be running on a system that
provides it with fast and reliable operation. Most importantly
each component on the systems must not conflict with any software
that could cause it to fail due to incompatibility.
Most
system administrators need to remotely login to servers to
watch or administer them. There are a wide variety of remote
access tools available for this from various vendors. As these
tools often cause conflicts with certain applications that
run on servers, we have tested many tools to determine compatibility.
It is important that you are aware of what remote
access systems you can reliably run on your servers that won't
conflict with Eclipse & 4D Server. The following
table represents our testing results. We will update this
list as more information comes to hand, or as we become aware
of newer products that customers are using for remote access:
| Product |
Is
Compatible? |
Manufacturer
Web Site |
Notes |
| Symantec
PCAnywhere 9.2 or later |
|
|
We've
used PCAnywhere for remote access for years, and although
its not a free product, its reliable and we are yet to
see any version of it conflict with 4D Server or Eclipse
in anyway. |
| Timbuktu
Pro Windows v6 or later |
|
|
This
lesser known product is ideal in a multi-platform environment
as they have both Windows and Macintosh versions available.
No conflicts have been reported with Timbuktu since v6
of their product. |
| Microsoft

RDS
has known incompatibility issues with 4D Server, causing
4D Server to hang, clients to crash and CPU utlization
to run at 100%. The culprit is the RDSClip process that
is used to transfer clipboard data between workstations
and the server. By terminating this process, it appears
to return 4D Server operation back to normal, however
restarting the server will automatically have this process
start again. We suggest not using this tool with
4D Server at all. |
| UltraVNC |
|
|
This
is an open source solution that will work fine with 4D
Server and 4D Client. However unlike its commercial counterparts
we have found that it doesn't handle screen refreshes
all that well, and with 4D applications, particularly
4D Client, it requires the operator to do a lot of forced
screen refreshes to get the screen updates handled properly.
Although no incompatibiltiy issues have been found, operation
of this tool leaves a lot to be desired, and we would
suggest using an alternative. |
| eBlvd.com |
|
|
eBlvd.com
is a web based subscription service to allow you to remotely
control any computer. It installs a remote control service
on the target computer. We use this for all tech support
issues and it works perfectly well with 4D Server and
4D Client operation. There is a monthly subscription fee
for continued usage based on the number of licenses required. |
Note:
Most remote access solutions require some additional ports
to be opened on your server and client (probably your firewall)
so that remote access can communicate. Please consult each
vendor's product documentation for further details on setup.
Also
note that providing support on remote access solutions is
NOT part of your Eclipse Support agreement package and this
information is provided as a courtesy to our customers only.
Please contact the various vendors mentioned for more information
on their products.
